Stand up for good typesetting
Article Abstract:
The typesetting in software needs to be enhanced in many ways. Publishing software packages hyphenate and justify text line by line, but they should compose text a paragraph (or more) at a time to avoid inconsistencies. If composition were done a page at a time type-color variations among paragraphs would be eliminated, and vertical justification would be possible. Dedicated typesetting systems have had these controls for many years, and they were even present in some early products for desktop systems. Designers should be able to adjust hyphenation and justification specifications according to line length. Hermann Zapf's HZProgram, which was bought by Adobe, adjusts character widths slightly to enhance line breaks. Algorithmic hyphens inserted by programs should be flagged, and hard hyphens should not be considered legitimate places to break a line.

Pianzhang 1.0
Article Abstract:
Miles 33 International's Pianzhang 1.0 is an excellent batch-pagination application for the Macintosh. The goal of this setup-intensive program is to anticipate every layout eventuality of a long document. QuarkXPress, the back-end, builds pages according to Pianzhang's guidelines. Pianzhang will return to page one to resolve a layout difficulty on page 12, making subtle changes that ripple through the document to the problematic page. Pianzhang is ideal for directories, encyclopedias, technical documents and other lengthy publications with highly structured pages. Users work from a master set of layout templates. Pianzhang's chief drawbacks are two poorly organized manuals and an unedifying online tutorial. Listing for $895, Pianzhang requires at least a Mac II with 12MB of RAM, 14-in gray scale monitor, System 7.0 and QuarkXPress 3.31.

Fondler 4.0.1
Article Abstract:
Rascal Software's $69.95 Fondler 4.0.1 font management software excels at diagnosing font problems. The software analyzes fonts, and generates a report on any deviations. However, the reports are very detailed and poorly documented, making it difficult to actually determine the problem. Users can analyze a single font, or the entire library, and the software will then rank irregularities into categories of importance. In some cases, such as a conflicting font ID, Fondler can fix the problem by issuing new numbers. Fondler includes a set of font management utilities, giving managers the ability to keep a database of information about a font library. Fondler can also gather fonts together into logical groups, and match printer fonts with screen fonts.
