Journalism in Central Asia: A promise of empty freedoms

Kyrgyzstan Ukraine, governments in the Central Asia region are becoming increasingly anxious for a democratic change. The constitutions of Central Asian countries state that censorship is prohibited and mass media are free of state control, but Azer Hasret, Chairman of the Central Asian and Southern Caucasian Freedom of Expression Network points out that these are just empty declarations.

Self-censorship: Moving toward the truth while deep-rooted censorship holds on
Article Abstract:
A culture of restrictions and self-censorship prevent the media from moving forward in Sri Lanka though there are signs of more press freedom. The problem in Sri Lanka was not just a hostile political and legal environment but also a culture of intolerance and violence that must be changed before Sri Lanka can bring in a true era of free expression.

Privacy rights vs. free speech
Article Abstract:
Journalists in Germany fear a serious threat to press freedom after a court ruling curtailed media reporting on the private lives of public figures. It is questionable how far press freedom, let alone the public mission to inform, is guaranteed under such circumstances.
