Let 'er RIP
Article Abstract:
Recent technology developments have added functionality and speed to raster image processors (RIPs). Vendors have improved RIPs by adding functions to their component processes. This approach to workflow, which some vendors call 'late binding,' gives an RIP more flexibility by delaying binding decisions to the last possible moment in the process. HyWay Ferranti's GList adds functionality by allowing an interpreter to create a vector file with font data and a page's geometric description. PostScript errors can be corrected before the file is distributed. To ensure predictability and efficiency, Linotype-Hell's Delta Technology contains only data that will be printed. It includes the DeltaTrapper feature for automatic or interactive trapping. Adobe Systems, the creator of PostScript, has developed Supra, a workflow architecture that incorporates prepress and postpress functions in the RIP system.

Step up to the plate
Article Abstract:
Computer-to-plate (CTP) printing is a means to all-digital production, but some experts feel its cost and use of digital proofing could stall its widespread acceptance. The all-digital production process is faster and less expensive than using film because it eliminates many of the steps required in film imagesetting. However, some users object to the necessary electronic imposition and digital proofing. Manufacturers recommend practicing on a 4-up or 8-up imagesetter to master the electronic imposition and using additional proofing methods to overcome the omission of bluelines caused by digital proofing. Although CTP ranges in price from $200,000 to $500,000, many users find it cost-effective. The thermal infrared plate, a recent development in CTP technology, provides even greater consistency and accurate imaging at higher resolutions.
