Live Picture 2.0
Article Abstract:
HSC Software's $995 Live Picture for Macintosh 2.0 is comparable to Adobe Photoshop and Fauve Xres, and is most notable for its ability to handle image files as large as 50MB and up. Time-intensive data processing is run at the end, giving this program incredible speed. Live Picture allows the user to distort, color correct and compose large high-resolution files with ease and speed. The program's Four Image Elements, which include Stencil, Visibility, Source and Mask, manipulate images in Insertion and Creative modes. Live Picture is very compatible with Photoshop programs and offers excellent support for process color. One drawback is when a user wishes to distort an entire multilayer image, the image must be built to a IVUE file and then be brought back into Live Picture to handle manipulation as one image. Also, blur/sharpen and distortion tools can only be used on one layer at a time. Live Picture requires 24MB RAM on a 040 Macintosh, 10MB hard disk space, System 7.0. The program ships with an Acquire plug-in.

Imposer 1.0.2/Markit 1.6.2
Article Abstract:
XChange's and A Lowly Apprentice Production's $99 Imposer 1.0.2 and $99 MarkIt 1.6.2 DTP extensions, designed for use with QuarkExpress, aim to cut the final cost of printing documents. Imposer 1.0.2 saves users money at the printshop by allowing them to submit film signatures in printer spreads, or with right and left pages arranged for final folding and binding. In addition, Imposer arranges PostScript files intended for service bureaus in printer spreads, thus accelerating the final print process. MarkIt 1.6.2 lets users design their own custom press marks, such as trim and bleed marks, color bars and registration crosses. However, some of MarkIt's features are hard to use; for example, marks move slightly when clicked on, forcing the user to reenter the coordinates.

The pressure's on: pressure-sensitive graphics tablets are more desirable than ever - but what are the important features to look for?
Article Abstract:
When purchasing a graphics tablet system it is helpful to know which numbers in the products' specifications are meaningful. Bigger tablets are not necessarily the best products, especially if they cost more. Likewise, a graphics tablet does not necessarily improve as its resolution increases, since, for example, no human can draw 1,270 lines per inch anyway, which is the typical graphics tablet's resolution. Sampling rates that are too low or high are equally useless, since the former causes jerky cursor movements, while a rate higher than 100 reports per second cannot be used to its full potential. Similarly, there is little difference between tablets that have pressure levels of 64 or 256. Additional specification information is provided.
