Low-stress guide to high-res printers: how do you select the best 600-dpi PostScript printer for the job?
Article Abstract:
A variety of issues should be addressed when selecting a laser printer, including the new generation of high-resolution 600-dpi PostScript laser printers. The major issues include if text and/or graphics are going to be produced, are the computers networked, are single or mixed IBM PC-type/Macintosh computing platforms used and what size output is required. Page-per-minute speed is an adequate guide to performance for text production, but processor clock rate is a more important factor for graphics printing. If a printer is to be networked, then it must have the ports or connectors appropriate to the target computing platforms, including automatic port switching where a mixed Mac/IBM environment exists. Also useful to the PC environment is automatic emulation switching, which usually involves additional support for the HP Printer Control Language. Use of multiple paper sizes is facilitated by printers that host multiple paper trays.

Set Phaser controls to stunning
Article Abstract:
Tektroniks Inc's impressive $9,995 Tektronix Phaser III PXi 300-dots-per-inch phase-change inkjet printer produces vivid, quality color PostScript images on almost any paper type for about 25 cents per letter-size page. The printer's phase-change inkjet technology, which employs solid ink sticks, offers several advantages over liquid inkjet printers, including little bleeding, even distribution of color, lower cost and and simpler mechanics for greater reliability. Phaser III PXi features include a single universal paper cassette that will handle paper up to 12-by-18-inches, front panel liquid crystal display, 10Mbytes of memory expandable to 18Mbytes, HP Graphics Language emulation and Centronics parallel, RS-232 serial, SCSI and AppleTalk ports. The printer is also Pantone-certified for accurate four-color simulation of Pantone colors and includes four-color correction options.

Tektronix Phaser 600
Article Abstract:
Tektronix's $11,995 Tektronix Phaser 600 solid-ink printer is an expensive, but excellent large-format print offering. The Phaser 600 uses a patented solid-ink printing method called phase-change printing that results in vibrant, bright colors that cool instantly. This technology enables the Phaser to print on almost any substrate while maintaining clear, bright image colors. The printer ships almost entirely assembled. While it can be accessed by any machine on a network, it does not require processor cards to configure or a dedicated RIP workstation. Configuring the system is simple using Tektronix's Web site or the complete print documentation. The Phaser 600 is more expensive than its competitors, but does not require an expensive RIP station. The printer's solid-ink refills are also only available from Tektronix and are expensive.
