Former art director of Rolling Stone and Newsweek magazines and the New York Times, Roger Black relies on electronic desktop publishing in his design consultant work. The procedure of writing cover headlines, proposing cover images and finalizing covers at Esquire magazine, for example, boils down to an interactive process in which everyone gets together around a large monitor and experiments with different design tactics. The US publishing industry accepts desktop technology in ways that Europe still does not. Madrid's El Sol newspaper is the major exception because it utilizes Apple Macintosh computers for all its needs. From a comparative perspective, the Mac software is easiest to learn and rarely requires reading the manual, whereas MS-DOS/Windows applications are more complex and users continue to use one program under one operating system and another program under another system. Sun Microsystems and NeXT platforms are the greatest challenges to the Mac supremacy in publishing. Multimedia continues to grow and the print industry should benefit from the electronic industry boom, growing with technological innovations.

Time for a change
Article Abstract:
The 1992 redesign of Time magazine, the editorial processes and technology employed to assemble and layout it and the computer, communications and printer technologies used to produce the finished product are described. Editorial changes have been made in the magazine over several years, but the fact that they had not been particularly noticed, a relatively strict format, and sometimes limited subject coverage, required a magazine redesign. Details of the implementation and testing of the makeover are discussed. The greater flexibility in the magazine layout and the late closing of the 'This Week' section requires sophisticated publications design and management technologies. The company employs a microcomputer-based Atex system for editorial and production management applications, Macintosh equipment for layout and graphics, Scitex SmartScanners and a Scitex Assembler workstation to merge text and graphics. Systems for communicating the final product to regional printing plants and readers' reaction to the makeover are detailed.

Information anxiety

Graphics designer Richard Saul Wurman's self-appointed task is to alleviate information anxiety with the help of graphics. Wurman defines information anxiety as the ever-widening gap between what people know and what they think they know. Wurman has authored or coauthored 45 books. His Access Press publishes such acclaimed travel guides as 'Paris Access' that are structured by geographic boundaries, not by hotels and restaurants. One of Wurman's recent books is 'Information Anxiety,' which itself is designed to support his belief that information is best expressed visually. His company has redesigned telephone directories for easier use.
