Matching the masters: designers meet the challenge of accurately reproducing fine art in digital form
Article Abstract:
Efforts to achieve color accuracy in fine art reproductions have created a new standard for color publishing projects. Increased use of fine art in electronic publishing adds a new dimension to the issue of color accuracy. A number of products have emerged in response, including palette coordination software, color-measuring devices and calibration schemes. Color accuracy can be increased at each point in the reproduction process through careful consideration of methods. The process involves photographing, scanning, output and proofing of an image. Using large-format film, the same emulsion batch and color-bar charts during development are important elements in producing color-accurate photographs. High-quality scanning, correct calibration and careful proofing also contribute to overall color accuracy.

Laying down the law; digital typesetting project beautifully restores the appearance of the ancient Jewish Talmud
Article Abstract:
The Talmud Project undertakes the enormous task of retypesetting the 15,000 page religious document. Pagination was a major concern, since it is used to identify passages. Other challenges included the sheer size of the project, the unconventional arrangements of text blocks, and the right-to-left path of Hebrew text. Yet, the project was essential, since most primary texts were copies of originals that had been destroyed by the Nazis years ago, and often lacked clarity and were illegible in parts. The project remastered the fonts used in the most revered version, first typeset in 1839. The project required huge teams of typesetters and scholars, who had to compare the new pages to the originals one letter at a time. One volume has been completed. The entire project is expected to take ten years.

A new spin on books
Article Abstract:
Electronic publishing is making headway in the publishing industry as publishers put history books, children books and consumer reference books on CD-ROM. Sunset Publishing, which publishes books on gardening, decided to put its 'Western Garden' on CD-ROM. Added features found in CD-ROM over traditional paper publishing include the ability to cross-reference across all sections. Mindscape is bringing the classic children's book 'The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter' to CD-ROM and needs to pay particular attention to retaining original artwork. Voyager, working with the American Social History Project, has put 'Who Built America' on CD-ROM. Voyager found some problems with getting digital rights for things published in the original book.
