Nonstop pages
Article Abstract:
Quark's Xpress's ($695) automatic page generation, together with good typographic controls, make this program particularly suited to the creation of long documents; for example, if a book publisher does the layout for one page, the program automatically replicates the layout for as many as 999 more pages. Xpress is, however, also 'precise' and 'flexible' enough for newspaper or newsletter publishers. Some problems are described: file management is not always smooth; and version 1.01 has occasional problems with system crashes. The program requires 512Kbytes (1 Mbyte is recommended), as well as 800Kbyte external disk drive or a hard disk. The program is recommended if you can tolerate its imperfections; otherwise, considering that updates are being offered regularly, you might want to wait until the quirks are all out, or until the particular features that you need are included.

Third time's no charm
Article Abstract:
Boston Publishing Systems's $295 Macpublisher III is the only page makeup program that displays information about what article a column of text belongs to, as well as how long and article is, what page it started on, and where it continues. The program requires many steps to complete a task, and importing text files is a frustrating procedure. Macpublisher treats word processor files as text only, so no formatting is preserved. The Scissors tool is required to flow text from column to column, and text that does not fit in the column gets clipped and accumulates on the left side of the screen.

Easy access to graphics
Article Abstract:
Graphidex 1.0 is a software package, from Brainpower, that allows a user to index a large collection of graphics images and to call up images, using a desk accessory, so that images can be copied through a Macintosh's clipboard without leaving an application. Images can be examined and modified in a Preview window. The program, which requires a 512Kbyte Mac, costs $124.95.
