New treatment for dull, lifeless packaging
Article Abstract:
BSP Labs asked DuPuis Design company to refashion the look of its Forget the Flakes medicinal dandruff shampoo and conditioner. Dupuis transformed the shampoo's image with a an eye-catching, colorful new bottle and advertising display. The company worked with Adobe Illustrator 3.2 two-dimensional illustration software to create a new logo, typefaces and colors. Then models were created with Ray Dream Designer three-dimensional design software. The new logo was retained and the designers experimented with bottle, counter-top display and box shapes. Schematic drawings with size dimensions and color specifications were finalized on Ray Dream Designer and sent to the manufacturer. The finished product uses interlocking partner bottles for shampoo and conditioner to convince the user to purchase both products and appeals to a masculine market with dark colors and squared, solid fonts.

FastEdit/TIFF, FastEdit/DCS, FastEdit/CT
Article Abstract:
Total Integration Corp's $239 FastEdit/TIFF, FastEdit DCS and FastEdit/CT plug-ins speed up spot touch-ups on Photoshop images and are a less expensive alternative to a digital signal processor accelerator card. FastEdit allows the user to select a section of a photo file with a 2.5-by-3.5-in image preview and crop it to a preferred shape or correct imperfections caused by scratches or dust. The program creates a small file with what is chosen in the preview screen, saves changes and repositions the corrected area in the larger file automatically. FastEdit works best with isolated, small areas since improved speed is lost when performing overall color or sharpness changes to large portions of the image. FastEdit on a 15-MB TIFF file tested up to a 40 percent increase in speed, while a 40-MB DCS file improved by 30 percent. Each FastEdit plug-in is sold separately.
