Pagemaker with pickup
Article Abstract:
Perhaps the most exciting feature of Aldus's Pagemaker for OS/2 Presentation Manager is its multitasking ability. OS/2 multitasking enables the user to run other applications concurrently with PageMaker. The program allows you to have up to four documents open at once, and text can be cut and pasted between them. Presentation Manager has a memory ceiling of 16Mbytes and runs 30 percent faster than PageMaker on a Macintosh II with System 6.0.3. Unfortunately, there are no downloadable printer fonts or appropriate screen fonts for Presentation Manager, and there are no drivers for high-resolution typesetters or the Hewlett-Packard Laserjet printers either. PageMaker for OS/2 sells for $795 and requires a 80286- or 80386-based minicomputer with at least 4Mbytes of RAM. This program provides long-awaited memory, ease of use, and speed.

Pasteboard perfect: Letraset's Design Studio gives designers flexibility with structure
Article Abstract:
Letraset's $795 Design Studio page makeup program gives the user the sense of actually laying out a page on a pasteboard. The program offers two layout systems, one employs margin and column guides, the other uses grid guides. Text and graphics can be rearranged easily with the mouse, and numeric specifications for a particular text block or graphic can be entered via a dialog box. Design Studio improves on other similar software by allowing you to bleed text and graphics off the page and extend text across facing pages. The program can handle fractions with correct sub- and superscripting. Customized features, including kerning and tracking tables provided with Design Studio, can be added to the basic program. Flexibility and useful electronic grids and structures make Design studio fun to use.

The full effect: Photo Finish brings 3-D design to the Mac and the PC
Article Abstract:
Enabling Technologies' $1,995 Pro 3D Photo Finish, a three-dimensional color illustration software program, is worth looking into for the high-quality, three-dimensional pictures it allows a user to compose. The full-color program comes in IBM PC and Apple Macintosh versions. Images can be designed in fine textures and detail, almost matching 35mm color photographs. 3D objects come from one of two sources: a 1,200-clip-art-image Clip 3D library and Enabling Technologies' Zing, a three-dimensional modeling program included with Pro 3D Photo Finish.
