Perfect patterns
Article Abstract:
Graphic designers who have trouble with rubbing down transfers to indicate any sort of regular pattern will appreciate Adobe Systems Inc's Collector's Edition: Patterns and Textures. Other graphics programs offer editable patterns, but the patterns' low-resolution, bit map format and small tile area provides little detail or irregularity to them. Collector's Edition solves these problems by providing resolution-independent PostScript patterns and textures. The program includes 366 patterns and textures with almost infinite flexibility. Each pattern or texture can be used as is, or rotated, skewed, or shifted along with the object that contains it. Collector's edition contains five categories: Architectural, Graphic, Cartographic, Classic, and Geological. Symbols used in the Architectural and Geological categories have been approved by their respective associations. List price is $225.

PostScript made easy
Article Abstract:
Aldus' Freehand 2.0 includes a predesigned PostScript effects feature which generates special fills and lines. The effects you want must be described, named and added to the Line and Fill menus following the illustrated guidelines in the manual. The code that creates special fills and lines is in Freehand's User Prep files. All commands must be produced precisely the way the manual shows them; the slightest deviation will result in an "undefined" PostScript error. The effects you have generated can then be used like any menu option. One drawback to this procedure is that none of the work can be seen on the screen; fills are represented with rows of tiny PS symbols and line effects are merely 1-point black lines. Printing the document is the only way to check on your work and printing all those PostScript commands can take quite a long time.
