Article Abstract:
Linotronic imagesetting costs vary widely at different service bureaus, which requires that customers comparison shop. Costs are determined by the number of pages and the complexity of the images. A page of text and simple monochrome graphics usually take about ten minutes to process; half-tone images could take up to 30 minutes. Costs are also affected by the kind of paper used, the quality of resolution, additional fees for rush orders, and telephone charges if copy is sent by modem. Bureaus that charge per minute can be more expensive if the typesetter uses the original raster image processor (RIP) and not the newer one released by Linotype. Customers should also check into volume rates and turnaround time.

Article Abstract:
Desktop publishing service bureaus offer innovative products, including gray-scale scanners, color flatbed and slide scanners, and color correction and separation software, all of which make it easier to incorporate photos into publications. Also available are optical character recognition scanners that convert printed text into an electronic file, medium-resolution laser printers, modems, facsimile machines, and computer bulletin board services that allow customers to communicate with the bureau and with each other. Aspects to consider when selecting a service bureau are discussed, and a directory of PostScript service bureaus is provided.

Publish! directory of PostScript service bureaus
Article Abstract:
A directory of PostScript service bureaus lists several dozen bureaus in the US and Canada that work with the Varityper VT600, the Linotronic 100, and the Linotronic 300 to increase the maximum resolution available from the 300 dpi delivered by laser printers to as high as 2,540 dpi from the L300. Each entry gives the name of the bureau, its telephone number, and the device it uses; a telephone symbol is used to denote those bureaus offering modem service. A list of all service bureaus offering Linotronic typesetting is maintained by Adobe on Compuserve; the list is updated quarterly.
