Pixel-painting paradise
Article Abstract:
Electronic Arts' $495 Studio 8 graphics software package is highly recommended. It takes longer to master than other color paint programs but its tools and versatility easily justify the learning time and price. The standard paint tools are rendered more useful by a variety of modifiers. For example, a paintbrush can be held at a certain angle and colors can be made opaque or translucent to any degree. Modifiers used with selection tools provide unequaled precision. Draft page and object mask features permit the user to experiment without affecting the original document. Among myriad special effects features are one that wraps objects around a geometric shape and one that creates three-dimensional illusions. The biggest drawback is disk space requirements: the manual recommends setting aside 6Mbytes of hard disk. Two Mbytes of RAM are also needed. A slide show utility is included and a color separation utility was scheduled for availability in Mar 1989.

The Mac's new type library: CG type
Article Abstract:
Each $149 Compugraphic CG Type disk contains four of eight new conservative fonts that are suitable for display and text applications. Antique Olive has round characters with large x-height; CG Collage combines small x-height with tall ascenders; Garth Graphic has calligraphic tendencies; CG Nashville Medium is a uniform slab serif face; CG Triumvirate is a versatile Helvetica look-alike; Shannon looks like old Irish calligraphy; CG Symphony has angled stroke ends; and ITC Novarese is the classic serif. Each package of four includes screen fonts and PostScript fonts that are downloaded manually, and Adobe Font Metrics (AFM) files. Each face is legible and shows uniform letter spacing at 300 dots per inch and 7 points. The CG typefaces do not have built-in leading as do most other fonts, yet they compare well with Adobe faces and are less expensive, which makes them a good buy.

Moving pictures: Studio/1
Article Abstract:
Electronics Arts' Studio/1 black-and-white painting and animation program is particularly useful for creating on-screen presentations with art and animation for Hypercard stacks, but the $149.95 program is a bargain for its combined black-and-white painting, scanning and animation functions. The Gallery program in the package lets separate Studio/1 documents, such as text slides, graphs and drawings, be connected for on-screen presentations; digitized sounds and such transition effects in the program as dissolves and zooms add considerable flair when moving from slide to slide. Several animation templates are provided that allow logos and titles to be flipped, drawings to be rotated, objects to be distorted and drawings to be moved across the screen. The palette of 'modifiers' in the package add a level of control over how the tools work; Studio/1 is given the highest rating.
