Prefab publishing; ten template packages for PageMaker
Article Abstract:
Users of Aldus PageMaker should consider using one of the available predesigned template packages that provide 'dummy' documents users can customized. Five such template packages are reviewed based on overall usefulness, performance and value. Of the five, the $99 Aldus Portfolios rates as top-notch and a must buy based on its outstanding documentation, use of style sheets, and its helpful spacing guides. Starburst Design's $179.95 Layouts Page Layout Templates is the only other package to use styles and it rates as exceptional and highly recommended. Par Publishing's $89.95 Page Designs Quick is tailored for newspaper and newsletter users and rates as competent and a worthwhile purchase. Antic Software's $49.95 Flexform Business Templates includes most standard business forms and rates as exceptional and is highly recommended. Finally, Layered Inc's $79 Notes for PageMaker gets an inferior rating.

Throw it a curve: TypeAlign
Article Abstract:
TypeAlign, $99.95 from Emerald City Software, is a desk accessory that works with Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to provide page layout, word processing, and illustration programs with text handling features. TypeAlign lets users set single-line heads along arcs, angles and freehand curves. It can produce EPS files that remain smooth on screen, it has excellent kerning control, it provides such special effects as text distortion, and it has flashy on-screen color. TypeAlign's shortcomings are minor: it only does single-line heads, freehand baselines are hard to edit, its color handling and lack of Pantone color selection limit its usefulness, and there are no keyboard shortcuts for viewing levels and tool selection. TypeAlign is well thought out, is easy to use, has a very complete online help file, and compensates for shortcomings in text formatting that are found in many publishing programs.
