Price-conscious printing: Hewlett-Packard Deskjet
Article Abstract:
The Hewlett-Packard Deskjet printer is a 300-dot-per-inch resolution ink-jet printer for under $1,000. This printer is slow and not recommended for projects that involve complex formatting, many graphics, or a wide variety of typefaces and point sizes. Six fonts are built-in, in 10 and 12 point sizes, and these can be expanded with additional font cartridges, but all type is in small sizes only; this printer will not print banner headlines. Deskjet will only print in portrait (or vertical) mode, a serious limitation if designing brochures and advertisements. The printer uses regular bond or copier paper but does not work directly with many popular desktop publishing packages. The Deskjet is a good printer for laser-quality word processing documents at $995, but is not an economic alternative to laser printers for desktop publishing.

Convenient to the core: Intellipress
Article Abstract:
Cordata's Intellipress "plug-and-play" turnkey desktop publishing system ($8,995) is well-packaged and features complete documentation. Cordata also provides all software upgrades and technical support. Two drawbacks to operating Intellipress are a screen monitor that glares because of its high resolution and the mouse cursor that is exceptionally slow. Cordata offers an optional scanner for $1,495 to go with the Intellipress desktop publishing system.

Not a bona fide bundle: HP Vectra Publisher PC
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard's HP Vectra Publisher PC ($5,316, with EGA monitor) is not a highly recommended desktop publishing turnkey system, because of its troublesome set-up and installation requirements. Hewlett-Packard, however, offers full technical support for all hardware and software, including software upgrades. The HP Vectra Publisher PC is a cost saver, if the complete package is purchased.
