Printing while you don't wait
Article Abstract:
Time wasted waiting for a page to print can be made up, not by making the Laserwriter faster, but by using a class of software packages called spoolers, which let you print and work at the same time. Four spoolers are tested: Supermac Software's Super Laser Spool ($149.95, multiuser $395); Infosphere's Laserserve ($99, multiuser $299); Think Technologies's Laserspeed ($100, multiuser $395); and Mac America's Laserspool ($99, multiuser $499). Each program require at least a 512K Mac; but unless a Mac Plus and a hard drive are being used, space considerations will dictate which spooler must be used. Spooling is a complex operation that conflicts with the Mac's system operation; all of these spoolers occasionally crashed without an apparent reason. Super Laser Spool is especially recommended, but the choice of a spooler will often depend on particular circumstances or equipment configurations.

Pagemaker made over
Article Abstract:
Aldus's Pagemaker 2.0 is 'smoother' and 'sleeker', and is highly recommended. Version 2.0 ($495) adds 20 program enhancements, and improves screen-to-printer fidelity in representing character widths and positioning graphics. File saves are faster; crashes are rare. The program is geared toward integrating various hardware and software; for example, formatted files from a number of Mac and PC word processors can be imported. The program's features and functional capabilities - both graphics and text - are detailed. The program requires 512Kbytes (1 Mbyte is recommended) and an 800Kbyte external disk drive (a hard disk is recommended).
