Ray Dream Studio 1.0
Article Abstract:
Ray Dream Inc's $499 Ray Dream Studio 3D illustration software is an excellent value with its nifty new features such as animation capabilities, the ability to add glow to renderings, and G-Buffer, which allows 3D data to be exported as an alpha channel for use in 2D programs. Ray Dream Studio offers the best and easiest 3D painting tool for applying and layering textures precisely. Its new rendering features also include the ability to create a third shader by mixing two shaders using a simple slider. For multimedia programmers and broadcast designers, Ray Dream Studio's animation capabilities are particularly attractive. Every parameter of each object, light and camera can be controlled by its animation timeline. Its Inverse Kinematics feature, which is a must for character animation, is usually not found in a product this inexpensive. Ray Dream Studio is highly recommended for users wanting a solid, all-around 3D package without having to pay the price of high-end features.

Asymetrix 3D F/X 1.0
Article Abstract:
Asymetrix Corp's $99 Asymetrix 3D F/X animation software is inexpensive and easy to use, but limited in features. Performing basic animation and 3D illustration tasks, Asymetrix 3D F/X produces high quality images and is accessible for Windows users without high-end features. It is unique in its ability to take a bit map, outline it and process it into a model. However, users cannot create complex models from scratch because it lacks a dedicated modeler. Objects can be manipulated in 3D space through a dialog box that scales, rotates and moves objects via arrow keys in real time. 3D F/X has a full text-creation tool, but it only supports TrueType fonts. Asymetrix 3D F/X requires a CD-ROM drive, Windows 3.1, floating-point unit, 16MB hard disk space and a 386 PC with 8MB RAM.

Visual Reality 2.0
Article Abstract:
Visual Software's Visual Reality 2.0 3-D software offers excellent modeling and rendering features, as well as a huge library of objects and textures. It is a good choice for users who are not serious about animation, despite the interface difficulties within the application. Visual Software has priced Visual Reality 2.0 right; the all-in-one Windows 3D application sells for only $259. Users will applaud the fact that Visual Reality includes 3D font creation capabilities, 2D image processing and seven CD-ROMS of textures and objects. One drawback is that Visual Reality has weak animation features. Another limitation is the outdated modular design, which forces users to move between five different modules that need to be opened individually.
