Strata Vision 3d 4.0, Sculpt 3D 4.0
Article Abstract:
Strata's $695 Strata Vision 3d 4.0 and Byte by Byte's $1,495 Sculpt 3D 4.0 both offer good 3D design and illustration capabilities with some variation in interface design and ease of use. While Sculpt can produce superior images due to its technical sophistication, it is difficult to use and lacks an intuitive modeling interface. Strata Vision has a very intuitive interface and an excellent 3d Sculpter module. Strata Vision and Sculpt share a number of largely evenly matched features in common, including texture-mapping and rendering. Sculpt's lighting capabilities are superior to Strata Vision, offering more options and unique functions, including a means of projecting images and an exposure meter. Overall, Sculpt offers greater sophistication and image quality at a higher level of technicality, user effort and cost; Strata Vision provides greater ease of use at a relatively low price.

KPT Bryce 2.0
Article Abstract:
Meta Tools' $299 KPT Bryce 2.0 provides a new interface for fast, easy and fun creation of 3D scenery. The new version has a real-time wireframe mode which displays a range of objects such as fog, shadows and receding mountains and a preview window for easy rendering. In addition, KPT Bryce 2.0 provides a library of primitive shapes that can be dragged in from the toolbar and manipulated. A useful new feature allows the importation of 3D models including models from popular libraries in the standard DXF format to create sensational scenes. Also, PICT images can be imported, resized and placed anywhere in the scene. The program lacks some features, such as the ability to make a PostScript object into a 3D logo. A free update enables faster rendering and provides enhanced tools including the ability to save files in PostScript 3, TIFF, PICT and Apple QuickTime VR formats.

Crystal Flying Fonts Pro 3.0
Article Abstract:
CrystalGraphics Inc's $245 Crystal Flying Fonts Pro 3.0 is a decent animation package that follows through on its name's promise, but does not support the control experienced 3D artists are accustomed to. The package will please users who simply wish to create titles and presentations, but is nonetheless likely to disappoint users as they outgrow the program's limited features. The package provides a restricted workspace with only top and front views; the two zoom levels are also limited. Numerous functions cannot be achieved from the top view. Flying Fonts Pro is designed well, with good, if slow, rendering; however, precise animation needs will probably not be met with this product.
