Driving and double speed
Article Abstract:
CD-ROM drives can be purchased that contain graphic elements such as fonts, clip art, stock photos and patterns and textures. The Kodak Photo CD system offers photo labs the ability to turn a roll of 35mm film into a CD-ROM disc of 2,048-by-3,072-dpi 24-bit-color scan files for a cost of less than $2 per image. The portability of an external CD-ROM drive is more practical for anyone who works on more than one microcomputer and may be worth the extra cost. Battery pack portable drives are also available for laptop computers, however they are slower than desktop versions. Multisession double-speed CD-ROM drives are available from several vendors at prices from $499 for the internal AppleCD 300i, up to $925 for the Toshiba America Information Systems TXM-3401P. CD-ROM drives from 16 vendors are listed; information includes vendor name, model, list price, access time, transfer rate and onboard cache.

CD-ROM types
Article Abstract:
A number of new CD-ROM disk drives are being developed or are already on the market and buyers need to know about new options to make informed choices. Double-speed disk drives spin twice as fast when dealing with non-audio information. Kodak's Photo CD will be released in the summer of 1992 and disk drive manufacturers have promised to upgrade equipment to handle Photo CD's multisession capabilities. Photo CD will allow film to be scanned onto a compact disc, forming the basis for multimedia projects. XA disk drives enable drives to retrieve data faster than standard CD-ROMs and to store more data on a disc. An add-in board with audio decompression capability is required for XA compatibility and such boards add hundreds of dollars to the CD-ROM price. Those planning to use Photo CD will probably decide to buy a new, more powerful drive. A buyers guide of 10 products is presented.
