Stretching the digital canvas: illustration software packages pack in the features
Article Abstract:
The major illustration software packages now support web publishing and have added tools to facilitate drawing, but often the features look the same from product to product. Adobe Systems and Corel now bundle their publishing software: Adobe's Web Collection, Publishing Collection, Design Collection and Dynamic Media Collection all include Illustrator along with software for web authoring, digital imaging and layout; and the Corel Graphics Suite 9.0 combines many different applications with CorelDraw. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 adds the Gradient Mesh tool for creating custom blends, and each point on the mesh grid can be a new color or shade. It also adds the Art brush, Calligraphic brush, Pattern brush and 400 new brush libraries. Macromedia's FreeHand 8.0 features the new Transparency lens fill that lets users choose opacity for objects as easily as a layer is chosen in Photoshop. CorelDraw 9.0 adds the ability to choose which internal RGB model to use, and the new Artistic Media tool places shapes or imported images along a path. Deneba's Canvas 7.0 features SpriteEffects for applying image editing filters to vector, text and bitmap objects or groups of objects.

Rules are made to be broken
Article Abstract:
The rules, or lines, placed below or above paragraphs in a page layout can help to make a quote stand out, separate text or embellish it in other ways. Because they can be programmed as part of a paragraph's standard format, they can be a part of the style sheet and will appear automatically whenever the situation is appropriate. Most programs allow designers to define a custom line width and to specify whether the rule should extend to the width of the text block. Although there is a default setting, it often takes some tweaking to get the lines to appear exactly where they are desired. The default can be modified in a dialog box, for the rule that appears on the top and on the bottom of the paragraph.

Old dogs, new tricks
Article Abstract:
The U.S. corporate training market is expected to double from a current level of $8.8 billion to $16.8 billion by 2004. The market is divided between providers of training services such as the LearnLinc Web portal and purveyors of such training software as Recor Corp's Skillspace. Driving the trend is the rapid growth of technology-delivered services such as LearnLinc, which offers a complete range of custom-tailored training services. Rockwell Collins, an aviation electronics firm, recently lowered costs and expanded productivity as it implemented over 280 courses for its 14,500 employees.
