Taming Thailand's press: corporate ownership fused with political ties threatens free press
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Independent Television, Thailand's only independent television channel, by the Shin Corp. is being protested by journalists who feel that the Shin Corp. will end the station's political activism. Shin Corp is owned by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is on trial for non-disclosure of assets. Protesting journalists and top officials at Independent Television have been fired.

The detainment, trial and sentencing of two Russian journalists for covering a routine, public street rally signals a new era in the Belarus government's desire to clamp down on press freedom and silence the voices of dissent.
