The graphical laserjet
Article Abstract:
Printer enhancement boards for the HP Laserjet Series II can make the HP more than twice as fast with twice the resolution of PostScript. Clearer, smoother halftone printing is also possible. Lasermaster's $3,995 LX6 comes with a Laserwriter Plus set of outline fonts, eliminating the need to download bit-mapped fonts. A $5,995 6Mbyte model is available for Laserjet IID's. Tall Tree System's $349 Jlaser is fast but has few other worthwhile features. Bit-mapping is essential, the documentation is confusing and, instead of halftones, Jlaser produces high-contrast black-and-white images. Both Intel's Visual Edge and Fx Unlimited's Lazagram cost $695 and produce excellent halftones. Lazagram does not work with Pagemaker but requires only 1.4 Mbytes to produce a halftone compared to Visual Edge's 4Mbytes requirement. All four boards come as a pair: one for the computer and one for the printer.

Laserjet express
Article Abstract:
Downloading fonts to an HP Laserjet Series II can either be done by a software application or by doing it yourself, which can result in some real time-savings. A utility program designed specifically for downloading fonts is the easiest way to download. First, fonts should be labeled as either permanent or temporary, then a test page should be printed to find out which fonts are already available to the printer. It is important to consider memory constraints and the number of soft fonts that a Series II can accommodate. A standard Laserjet Plus or Laserjet II has 512K of memory, of which 290K are available for font storage. Tips on using Ventura and Pagemaker are also given.

Add Postscript to your laserjet
Article Abstract:
The Laser Connection PS Jet replaces the top portion of laser printers using Canon LBP-CX engines to transform them into the equivalent of an Apple Laserwriter. PS Jet has two advantages over the Laserwriter: two megabytes of RAM and more efficient storage of prep files and fonts. Installation is clearly described and illustrated in an excellent manual. The switch box does not fit in some printers. Check with the manufacturer.
