The next chapter for book publishers: best-selling reasons to adopt desktop publishing
Article Abstract:
Desktop publishing impacts the economics of book publishing with its new technology, and stimulates the industry in various ways, including the following: start-up publishing houses benefit; more specialty titles appear; works from first-time writers are facilitated; and, possibly, books are less expensive. Some benefits are not economic ones: editors have more control over format and content; designers are freer to experiment; and time spent preparing books is significantly decreased. Some publishers are mentioned, and some books are described. For example, Simon & Schuster recently produced Football for Young Players and Parents, a book that was co-authored by Bob Oates Jr and Joe Namath, using a Macintosh microcomputer running Macdraw and Ready Set Go. Addison-Wesley, among large publishers, makes particularly varied and frequent use of desktop technologies.

Self-service publishing: now there's easy access to desktop publishing by the hour
Article Abstract:
Many copy centers now offer desktop publishing facilities in their shops, and individuals and businesses are using such services and equipment to produce resumes, flyers, brochures, labels, newsletter, magazines, and even books. Equipment typically consists of items such as the following: Macintosh and-or Mac Plus computers; Laserwriter printers; word processing, graphics and page composition software; IBM PCs; Linotronic typesetters; scanners; and file conversion software. Typically, a user brings in his copy and enters the data via a word processing program; typefaces are reworked ; text and graphics are formatted; the data is saved to disk; and a proof page is printed, using a laser printer, for final inspection or corrections. Advice is available, or the work can be done by the copy center staff.
