The service bureau shuffle
Article Abstract:
Most service bureaus are still Mac-based and sending them PC-based files is an exercise in futility, but this situation is slowly changing. Users are advised to investigate and ask questions before expecting the bureau to process their PC files. Avoid using PostScript files, they are now an anachronism, and most service bureaus cannot handle a print file. Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is a viable file format, but the user should be sure that the printer configurations are correct. Service bureaus can open a PDF file and print portions of a job when necessary. A copy of Adobe Acrobat is essential for creating PDF files, in spite of some applications' claims to the contrary.

The great paper chase: laser paper roundup
Article Abstract:
Laser papers from seven vendors are evaluated and compared. These papers are no especially useful for photocopies or camera-ready printouts, but for originals, laser paper - thicker, smoother and whiter than copier paper - makes a difference by lending contrast and weight to pages. Laser Print, from Hammermill is called 'the all-around best buy' for bright white laser papers. Laseredge HR-30 ($50 a ream), from CG Graphic Arts Supply, is recommended for artwork or for projects that have elements pasted onto them. Be careful when using HR-30 because it sometimes feeds improperly. HR-30 works best if it is fed into a printer manually.
