Minding your manners on-line; E-mail is inherently inhuman. Although you're not communicating face to face, remember there's still a human being on the receiving end
Article Abstract:
Users of electronic mail (E-mail) systems must keep a constant vigil on the messages they send to prevent possible and even destructive misunderstandings. The problem with E-mail communication is that it removes dimensions of non-literal communication; for example, users on the receiving end of the line are unable to see the smile on your face or the twinkle in your eye; the nuances of communication are missing, and what you had meant as a joke may be perceived as a threat. There is something about the lack of emotions, or of human contact, in communication that can provoke deep emotional reactions. The thing to do is remember there is a human being on the other end of the line. If you mean no harm in something you fear may be taken the wrong way, add a smiley face; DO NOT SHOUT AT YOUR PEN PAL WITH CAPITAL LETTERS; and if you are involved in a debate, attack your opponent's ideas, not your opponent. Being aware of how you write your messages can circumvent a lot of grief.

I want to turn you on-line
Article Abstract:
On-line network services are wonderful resources with which to quickly find facts and information. It is even possible for the user to find the information he is looking for in a minute's time, but this is more likely if the user knows some techniques for searching in the digital world. Each on-line service has its own commands. Take the time to learn them. Learn to use desktop and on-line file systems together. Browse entire files at first and then narrow down, then jump into a particular dialogue of interest. Make small talk, make friends; the best information will come from people who know who you are and your fields of interest. Finally, be willing to communicate with people - help comes from the community you are involved in, not from file systems and protocols.
