Wise enough to play the fool
Article Abstract:
Virtually every interest group, no matter how small, has a publication of its own, and the Web has increased this power to communicate to tiny, targeted groups. A Web surfer can often find a site devoted to any interest, and the failings of search engines can be frustrating when locating the site in question is difficult. Electronic publishing has its own community on the Internet, although it is fragmented compared to the gathering that converges in person on a trade show such as Seybold. Conversations can become heated and include such debates as 'religious wars' between the advocates of QuarkXPress and Adobe PageMaker. One news item printed in the April issue of Publish magazine discussed the release of QuarkXPress 5.0 and was an April Fools' joke, but numerous users took it seriously and asked for demonstrations at Quark's Seybold booth.

Canon BJC-4550
Article Abstract:
Canon's $499 BJC-4550 color inkjet printer is an expensive offering that provides adequate capabilities. The printer offers an array of output options for inks and printing surfaces. Using a Photo-color ink cartridge and high-resolution paper produced a better version of an RGB scanned image than Publish's Kodak color copier. Designers interested in using the printer as a proofing device will need to maintain two versions of image files, one for final output and one for BJC, to ensure clear results. While the BJC-4550 offers excellent options for an inkjet printer, it remains slow, especially compared to laser printers. The printer is also unreliable about printing PostScript files, and color fidelity is questionable.

Bargain buy: Publish It Easy
Article Abstract:
Publish It Easy, $199 from Timeworks Inc, is a low-cost, entry-level program that can rotate text, control kerning and letterspacing, and scale type horizontally. It has drawing and painting tools, custom alignment grids, hyphenation and spell-checking, a pasteboard, and pre-designed layout templates that make it easy for users to begin working immediately. The program is easy to use until the user wants to use its advanced features; then it is no longer easy. Users who need more than Publish It Easy's basic capabilities probably will be happier with a full-featured program. But if Publish It Easy's basic functions are what is needed, then the program should be sufficient.
