The world is getting flatter
Article Abstract:
Publishers are replacing low-end drum scanners with high-end flatbed scanners because the flatbeds are easier to use and come with advanced performance features, including dynamic color range and resolutions as high as 5,000 dpi. One major inconvenience of drum scanners is the requirement for originals to be flexible enough for mounting on the inside or outside of the drum. Flatbed scanners do not have this disadvantage. They can therefore be used to scan oversize originals, as well as stiff originals such as images in bound books, glass plates and mounted slides. The PMT sensors used in drum scanners capture a wider color range than the CCD sensors used in flatbed scanners. However, improvements in CCD devices have enabled flatbed scanners to reach color density ranges of 3.7, compared with 3.8 to 4.0 found in drum scanners. A buyer's guide compares the prices and features of 14 flatbed scanners manufactured by six different companies.

Scanning for less
Article Abstract:
The 600-dpi 30-bit and 36-bit flatbed scanners currently available offer improved resolution and color quality for less than $3000. To make the best choice, prospective buyers should determine the accuracy of listed specifications. Maximum resolution, which is measured in dpi, indicates how much detail the scanner records. Optical resolution refers to the resolution of the light sample from the unit's charge-coupled device, the array of light sensors that convert light to digital information. With interpolated resolution, the scanner inserts pixels into a page previously scanned at maximum optical resolution. Although scanners with 30- or 36-bit color depth capture a wide range of colors, some of that data may be lost through the software. The 600-dpi scanners come with transparency adapters as well as scanning, image-editing and color-calibration software.
