Tread lightly: an in-house Web server requires careful planning
Article Abstract:
A business wanting to host its own web server needs to consider that there are many hidden costs, and it may be better off using a web hosting service. Hardware and software are a small part of the total cost. The time required for installation and maintenance and the level of technical expertise available are important considerations. DSL and cable modems are the most popular high-speed Internet connections: DSL's full-time high-speed Internet connection costs about $80 a month for 128 Kbps and $800 a month for 1.5 Mbps, but cable modem speeds go down as more users log onto the local loop. The four most popular server operating systems are the Mac OS, Windows NT, Linux and FreeBSD. The choice of operating system depends on familiarity, the level of performance required, and the level of technical expertise available. Linux and FreeBSD are less secure than the Mac OS and Windows NT, but for most sites such basic precautions as secure passwords, disabling TCP/IP services not in use, and watching for security bulletins should suffice.

Room for a view
Article Abstract:
The CRT market is forecast to exceed $31.6 billion through 2003, but as the market matures a small number of vendors will come to dominate and prices will continue to drop. Important factors in selecting a monitor include viewable image size, which is the screen space actually used to show images and is measured diagonally in inches; maximum resolution, which is measured in pixels per inch (ppi) and is at least 1,600 by 1,200 ppi for the 40 17-inch and 24 19-inch monitors listed here; and recommended resolution, which is the standard setting for multisynchronous monitors and is usually 1,280 by 1,024 ppi. The Video Electronics Standards Association recommends a refresh rate, or vertical frequency range, of at least 85 Hz, or 85 times a second, to avoid screen flicker. Other features to consider when selecting a monitor are horizontal frequency range, phosphor pitch, and tube type.
