True conversions
Article Abstract:
One laser printer and three font conversion programs are presented that can put any typeface into any type format needed. Metamorphosis Professional (Meta Pro) is the most expensive and also offers the most formats, user friendliness and is the most bug-free of the group. Meta Pro is available from Altsys Corp for $149 and runs on the Macintosh Plus with 1Mbyte RAM, single floppy drive, System 6.0.4; 2Mbyte RAM and hard disk are recommended. Formats available include Type 1, Type 3, TrueType; PICT and EPS outlines for importing and editing in Claris MacDraw and Adobe Illustrator; Type 1 for NeXT. FontMonger from Ares Software Corp is a $99.95 program that runs on the Mac Plus. This multipurpose tool allows users to combine characters from different typefaces into a single font. Size, slant, character width and position can be altered and saved as a new font. Evolution 2.0 is a $79.00 program from Image Club Graphics, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, which also runs on the Mac Plus. The Personal LaserWriter LS, from Apple Computer is a $1,299 TrueType compatible laser printer that runs with any Macintosh with 1Mbyte RAM and System 6.0.7 or higher. The combination Apple LaserWriter and LS/TrueType combination is designed to take advantage of the TrueType font technology and is recommended.

Ray Dream AddDepth 1.0.1, Adobe Dimensions 1.0
Article Abstract:
Both Ray Dream Inc's $179 AddDepth 1.0.1 and Adobe Systems Inc's $199 computer graphics packages make the creation of good-looking three-dimensional (3D) art relatively fast and easy. The programs import and export art in PostScript format, which makes file sizes much smaller, allowing users to measure rendering times in seconds and edit the resulting files in a PostScript drawing program. The packages also import text and line art from drawing programs like Aldus FreeHand; images are extruded into a 3D shape by typing in values for a desired depth, and surface color, gloss and other effects can be added at a later time. AddDepth's built-in text and drawing tools give it the edge over Dimensions, which requires users to produce all art in a separate drawing program first. However, Dimensions is versatile, providing a range of facilities for lathing, edge beveling and texture mapping. Both packages are easy to learn and perform well.
