Layout superstars: PageMaker and QuarkXPress upgrades face off
Article Abstract:
Quark Inc and Aldus Corp release QuarkXpress 3.0 and PageMaker 4.0 desktop publishing software, respectively. Both programs' page layout design remains the same, however each software package has adopted features for which the other was known. Historically, PageMaker has featured a pasteboard which enables the designer to work as if on a drawing board. XPress offered better color handling and typographic controls. The PageMaker upgrade offers word processing, enhanced typographic features and improved capabilities for the creation of long publications. XPress, meanwhile, has added a pasteboard and moveable tool palette. PageMaker's Story Editor allows spell-checking and search-and-replace functions to be executed outside the layout. XPress offers better graphics handling features including 360-degree rotation and skewing. Both programs can now anchor graphics to text.

Mac: Display Adbuilder
Article Abstract:
Digital Technology International's $4,995 stand-alone advertisement makeup software for the Macintosh, Display Adbuilder 1.1, is expensive and hard to justify when there are alternative programs that are as effective and less costly. Text can be freely rotated, and kerning tables can be built and modified, but all text must be entered and formatted in a text-handling box before it appears in text blocks. Display Adbuilder offers leading and character width adjustment in .001 increments, easy object placement and a built-in graphics library. However, there are no on-screen rulers, graphics can not be scaled by percentage and there are only three viewing sizes. Scanned images can be imported, but they can only be cropped and scaled. The program is easy to install and fairly easy to learn, but its price and problems prevent it from being recommended.

Why I left Pagemaker for Quark Express
Article Abstract:
The decision on whether to use Pagemaker or the $795 Quark Xpress depends on the user's requirements. Quark Xpress is the obvious choice for a user who uses a page makeup application for creating final art. Quark Xpress is better than Pagemaker at providing the control necessary to refine graphics and text. Quark Xpress' drawbacks include the fact that it is mathematical, demands that the user deal with figures and calculations, and is not as easy to learn as Pagemaker. Learning Quark Xpress requires slogging through the inferior manual. Quark Xpress has highly subtle typesetting capabilities that can do wonders for a layout. Quark Xpress produces high-quality work at low cost in in a short period of time and allows complete control over the outcome.
