Wide loads: wide-format printers push desktop publishing in new directions
Article Abstract:
Wide format printers have come down in price, giving more shops the ability to offer color output at any size, and at much lower cost than ever. Wide-format printers serve three markets; indoor displays, outdoor displays, and indoor/outdoor signs. There are several different approaches to wide format printing, including ink jet. Although it is not waterproof and will fade in bright light, a wide format ink jet printer is an excellent choice for proofs, comps or indoor displays. Electrostatic printers, on the other hand, uses a pigment-based ink that is more waterproof, although the life expectancy of the output may be only a few weeks. A thermal transfer printer is best for projects that require durability, although these are usually limited to 24 inches in width. Resolutions of 300dpi and higher are available, making it possible for posters to be viewed up close as well as at a distance.

Pour on the color
Article Abstract:
Color copiers and multifunction printers are finding new uses in design workgroups that generate many interim designs before final printing. These devices are also a worthy investment for short-run color output by quick-print shops, corporate print centers and retail service bureaus. There are just four vendors manufacturing copiers, other companies merely resell their products and bundle sales and service options. With prices on these systems ranging from $11,500 to $135,00, service is an important consideration. Considerations when purchasing a system include speed, image quality, maximum media size and maximum image size, maximum paper capacity, duplexing capabilities, sorting functions, stapling capabilities and scanning functions.
