For words and pages: Legend
Article Abstract:
NBI's $695 Legend 1.1 is a combination page layout and word processing program that runs under Windows on an 8-megahertz AT-class PC compatible. Legend has text, graphics, and table frames for page layout, but it also has frameless pages for word processing. Legends text editing features include keyboard control of cursor position and a search-and-replace function.Style sheets are used to vary existing styles while editing without switching modes. Instant formatting is possible by applying a set of defined frame properties. Tables can either be created manually or from imported DIF files, which is a slow process with limitations. An unlimited number of frames can be put on a page and linked from page to page with x-y coordinates. Legend cannot function across file, nor does it have master pages. It is still an excellent program.

Software strategies: straight answers to basic questions about choosing PC publishing programs
Article Abstract:
Prospective desktop publishers using MS-DOS based micocomputers must address several questions in selecting suitable desktop publishing software. These include what page layout program to select, will a word processing program still be needed, criteria for selecting fonts, where to get illustrations, the importance of different graphic formats, how to manage illustration files, and should anything else be bought first. The serious programs for page layout are Xerox Ventura Publisher and Aldus Pagemaker, which are briefly evaluated. Word processing programs are still necessary because the editors of the page layout programs are too rudimentary. Chaos prevails in the microcomputer font market because each type of laser printer uses a font format that are incompatible with the others. The other questions are also briefly answered.

Design and type: Designer 3.01
Article Abstract:
Designer 3.01, $695 from Micrografx, Inc, has no peer for technical drawing and the new features and improvements mean it can hold its own against other programs for graphic arts tasks. Version 3.01 permits the user to mix typefaces, sizes, and styles within a single text block. It also provides access to any Bitstream or URW outline typeface in any point size. Text can be edited in place, directly in the document, or in a separate window. A Bezier-curve drawing tool is added and users can slice Bezier curves apart at selected nodes. Version 3.01 can import and export color maps. It comes with only 41 typeface outlines, less than most of its strongest competitors, and it cannot import PostScript fonts in any format. This version keeps the best features of the earlier versions.
