Word's little brother
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Write is an entry-level word processing program suitable for simple office documents. Its features include automatic headers, footers, footnotes, tabs, and commands for creating mathematical formulas. Write does not provide components of more complex documents such as generation of an index or table of contents, style sheets, or automatic hyphenation. Format settings apply to the entire document and cannot be changed by section. The program does have an excellent 80,000 word spelling checker and a good on-screen help system. Write is a competent word processing program. It is a particularly good choice if the user plans to move on to Microsoft Word after becoming familiar with word processing. If the user does not plan to advance to Microsoft Word, Write's competition (Claris's Macwrite and T-Maker's Write Now) should be considered before a purchase is made. Microsoft Write costs $175.

Put in a good Word
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's Word for Windows is a version of the firm's word processing package designed for the Windows environment. The $495 package will be easy to learn for anyone with experience in Word for the PC or the Mac. Outstanding features including powerful macro resources and the ability to view up to nine documents concurrently in separate windows earn the program 4.5 of a possible five stars. Poor documentation and severe hardware demands, including a recommendation for at least 1Mbyte of EMS memory prevent the awarding of the final half star. Present owners of Microsoft Word can upgrade for $150.

Page layout with Word 4.0: it's a short journey from word processing to simple page layout
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Word 4.0 allows users to create multicolumn pages in which tables can contain numbers, text, graphics, even 'minitables' created with tabs. Word 4.0 allows one to set up a page layout grid structure by changing column widths and merging cells, and then fill out the structure with formatted graphics and text. The basic step-by-step procedures for page layout using Microsoft Word 4.0 include inserting the table, setting column widths, merging the cells, entering the text, creating a 'minitable' and inserting a graphic. It is best to preview the table before printing it.
