1998's alternating business climate currencies: whiplash changes leave location winners, losers in wake
Article Abstract:
The regional economic crisis has brought opportunities and losses in business relocation, with currency fluctuation serving as the indicator of business relocation attraction. Those countries that are experiencing economic crisis or peripherally affected are the losers in the business relocation movement, with their highly variable currencies posing as great deterrents to relocation. Those countries with stable economies and currencies are the great magnets of investments. But a number of multinational firms are exploiting the situation in beleaguered economies, scooping up a number of important properties while prices are promising.

CDI and IDRC's new HQ: the cutting edge comes home
Article Abstract:
Conway Data Inc. (CDI) and the International Development Research Council (IDRC) have moved to a new headquarters in suburban Atlanta, GA, to manage operational costs more effectively. The move reflects IDRC's canons for its Corporate Real Estate 2000 program for the real estate industry. This program promotes new standards on cost management, productivity and technology. The new headquarters, albeit located just across CDI and IDRC's old building, cuts cost by 19% but adds 10.5% of space to allow for greater interaction between CDI's production group and the other departments.

Real estate spearheads Mobil's globalization
Article Abstract:
Mobil's real estate unit, Global Real Estate (GRE), won the 1998 Best Practices Award for Globalization, which was sponsored by the International Development Research Council. While the company's global thrust received much attention from its merger with Exxon, the GRE was actually the catalyst for the company's global operations. Back in 1990, when Mobil decided to concentrate on its offshore markets, the GRE provided support services for company personnel assigned to distant locations. It also pioneered in providing integrated services globally in 1994.
