A chance to rebuild
Article Abstract:
Social housing stock in the UK has declined since 1994, with funding predicted to be reduced by 56% between 1994-2000. It is estimated that 140,000 new houses are needed, with around 3.4 million houses requiring repair and renovation. The Labour government has suggested that they may increase the availability of social housing by releasing council funds, made up from sales receipts. Labour also favours giving councils access to the capital markets to raise extra funding. The Conservative government had expected the private sector to provide additional social housing.

Awaiting the retailing renaissance
Article Abstract:
The Marketgate retail development in Lancaster, England, is not in demand despite the fact that estate agents believe it has significantly improved the city centre and make the area more attractive to businesses. Its 125,000 square feet of retail space was built by Centreville and cost 28 million pounds sterling to build. Centreville remains confident that the building will be a success. Several large retail companies are currently considering the complex.

Heading for the hills
Article Abstract:
Business parks outside towns in North Wales are much more popular than town sites because of the nearby towns Wrexham and Chester which do not have much quality office space. Rents in Wrexham are approximately 45 pounds sterling per square meter because of the high demand for offices and the limited availability. Wrexham Technology Park provides 5.3 hectares of office space which are expected to be fully occupied by Nov. 1996.
