Stepping out
Article Abstract:
Significant changes have taken place in the UK shoe shop market since the break-up of British Shoe Corp in 1997. High-volume brands such as Dolcis and Shoe Express have experienced a decline, and more sales are now going to fashion chains such as Shelley and Nine West. Acquisitions from British Shoe Corp have allowed new players to enter the marketplace, and a much more innovative approach is being taken to marketing. Rapid expansion has been seen particularly at Nine West, which has made purchases including Shoe Studio Group and Cable & Co.

Rags to riches
Article Abstract:
Bordesley in Birmingham is the first new purpose-built urban village in the country and is the result of a partnership between public and private sectors. It was a derelict and neglected area and the aim was to build many homes in a self contained residential area, incorporating a village centre with shops, village hall, public house and doctor's and dental surgerys. Oher areas of high unemployment and large expanses of post-war public housing could learn from Bordesley.
