A change of programme
Article Abstract:
Oracle, the second-largest software firm in the world, has obtained planning permission for 23,225 sq mt on a 6.5ha site at Blythe Valley Park near Solihull, England. The first building on the site will be completed in Jul 1999, and a second will be constructed after the first is full. Oracle was attracted to the Solihull area by relatively low levels of traffic congestion, quite inexpensive land and the fact that there are three universities nearby. The buildings at the new site will be developed as standalone units, rather than linked ones, allowing the company to sell them off as necessary.

To build, or not to build?
Article Abstract:
The office market in Greater Manchester, England, experienced a revival in 1996, with 72,741 sq mt of office space being taken up in South Manchester, up by 94% from 1995. However, this has left a serious shortage of high quality office accommodation, and some agents are responding by calling for more schemes to be constructed speculatively. Others are more cautious, emphasising that speculative developments should only be undertaken in strategic locations.

Split development
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of out-of-town office developments in Hull, England, and this has encouraged occupiers to leave the city centre. Out-of-town rents have now become considerably higher than city centre rents. Attention is now turning to reviving the city centre, with some buildings being refurbished. However, out-of-town development is still taking place, a trend which will meet growing demand for high quality industrial accommodation.
