Stocking filler
Article Abstract:
A study into the UK industrial property market, during 1998, found many observers felt the market would suffer over the following year. The value of land had grown by 71% around Heathrow Airport, England, and 50% in Edinburgh, Scotland, during Dec 1996-Jun 1998. Whilst Bristol, England experienced a negative growth and Darlington, England, failed to register any increase in land value. Demand for industrial property had been rising since 1993 but started to decline in the Winter of 1997. There was a 2% rise in industrial floorspace during the second qtr of 1998.

A matter of restraint
Article Abstract:
The policy of restraint on office development adopted by the council of Winchester, England, causes some controversy locally. The council is keen to avoid over-development in the historic town, and also says that it has been difficult to fill existing job vacancies. It is, therefore, actively encouraging changes of land use from office to residential, and is allowing only retail development in the town. Developers believe office space is needed, that this policy may cause the town to miss out on growth, and that the town risks losing existing occupiers.
