BMW drives into South Carolina with $300 million auto plant
Article Abstract:
German carmaker BMW has selected a site in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina for its new manufacturing facility. The site was chosen for its favorable labor climate, good local transport systems, stable tax rates, the support of the governor and the area's many multinational firms. Located near the Greenville-Spartanburg airport, the 176,500-square meter plant is seen to generate employment for some 2,000 people by the end of the 1990s. Some $250 million to $300 million has been allocated for the new facility during the next three years. The plant is BMW's second outside its home base Germany.
