Baltimore: competitive pressures force fundamental changes
Article Abstract:
The 1990s decade has seen the growth of the real estate industry in Baltimore, MD. The increasing demand for office space in the city was concentrated in the central business district indicating the importance of the metropolitan area as a financial center. The retail sector remains strong while the modernization of the city's international airport had significant stimulative effects. However, this positive outlook may be clouded by the slow employment growth which is expected to affect the industry negatively.

The new hedge accounting and derivatives valuation paradigm
Article Abstract:
Real estate industry managers need to understand the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) FAS 133 to comply with required hedging and accounting objectives. The person responsible for an organization's hedging must learn how to comply with the designation requirements, including identifying the risks the company is hedging against. FAS 133 is expected to change the way companies manage and hedge risk. However, the FASB needs to ameliorate the volatility in earnings that FAS 133 may create.
