Some local agents have expressed their concern whether there is sufficient public demand to fill the three new multiplex cinemas in Birmingham, England, which will provide 62 screens. Several restaurateurs are looking to take units in the new leisure developments. Morrisons will include a multiplex as part of their 355,200 sq ft development of the Broadway Plaza. The Fiveways 200,000 sq ft leisure development is already underway. The 380,000 sq ft Star City includes a Superbowl, restaurants and a multiplex. It has been purchased for 80 million pounds sterling.

The numerous independent public houses in Glasgow, Scotland, are being joined by an increasing number of well-known brewers who are opening their own outlets. Rents have risen as rivalry over sites has increased. Agents fear some operators will not be successful particularly as there is a threat of an economic slow down. Others predict the restaurant market is likely to become more competitive in the future. A 350,000 sq ft leisure centre has received planning permission, it will include retail outlets, cafes and a 20 screen cinema.

There are concerns demand for multiplexes in the UK will not continue to grow although multiplex owners suggest customers will increase by 5 million. Some 29 multiplexes being built which will offer 12% extra capacity for customers by the end of 2000.
