Article Abstract:
The market for call centre operations in the UK is growing rapidly, with the utilities companies seeking to start or expand their own call centres in the near future. It has been predicted that 3% of the population will work in call centres by the year 2000. Call centre operations do not need to be situated near customers or the companies which own them but they do require a good local supply of labour. As the gas and electricity companies are deregulated, the need for them to develop call centres serving the whole country becomes increasingly important.

The art of perfect planning
Article Abstract:
A study into the process of making local plans in Scotland has found that local authorities spend too much time trying to create an ideal plan. Plans are therefore never completed because circumstances are constantly changing. Some experts suggest that local authorities and developers should join together to help speed up the planning process. The study recommends that procedures could be made much faster without the need to resort to legislation. The production of local plans in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, took 14 years and three months.

On the circuit
Article Abstract:
There are now a number of large electronics companies located in a high-tech belt which runs from Ayr to Aberdeen in central Scotland. Concerns operating in this area now produce 35% of Europe's personal computers and 21% of its integrated circuits. There are a number of financial incentives available to companies considering setting up a presence here, and the region also offers good communications links.
