Muscle power: as health and fitness becomes big business, so the larger chains are muscling out the small high street operators
Article Abstract:
There are around 5,500 indoor sports facilities in the UK, according to the Fitness Industry Association, with 2,500 private health clubs operating in 1996. Many large regional and national brands have taken over the smaller fitness club operators, including First Leisure's purchase of the Riverside Group, and Dragon's acquisition of Lingfield. Clubs are larger and are appearing in retail situations with easy access for office workers and shoppers. Larger clubs are also launching a variety of brands such as fitness-only clubs.

Article Abstract:
Rents for UK health and fitness complexes have increased from about 6-7 pounds sterling per sq ft, to over 10 pounds sterling per sq ft, due to the increasing competition in the sector. The UK health and fitness market is growing rapidly. Larger operators are moving into the business and taking over from the independent operators. Health clubs need sites of between 10,000-40,000 sq ft, located near residential areas, with good car parking facilities.
