Food for thought
Article Abstract:
The growing opinion against large out-of-town developments in the UK has forced supermarket chains to reconsider using town centre sites. This has brought them into direct conflict with brewers, which are seeking prime locations for latest super-pubs and themed outlets. Against this background, it is proving difficult for food retailers to find appropriate town centre sites, and they often have problems obtaining planning permission. They are therefore looking to other ways of attracting customers, such as loyalty schemes.

Market towns and food stores: a new policy approach
Article Abstract:
The Department of the Environment (DoE) issued a revised PPG6 in Jul 1993 which stated that food supermarkets in district centres and small towns are very important in providing a range of quality shopping. The Environment Committee's report of Nov 1994 has supported the PPG6. It is vital to ascertain how much superstores affect grocery shopping in smaller centres, and if food supermarkets in smaller towns will attract shoppers in 'top-up' grocery purchasing trips.

Shopping plan rocks the boat: opinion is divided over the merits of building an out-of-town shopping centre on the western outskirts of Hull
Article Abstract:
There is continued controversy over Marks & Spencer's plans to build a megastore at Priory Park on the western outskirts of Kingston upon Hull. Some believe it would have a damaging effect on city centre traders, although city planners support the scheme, and some feel that the development would help in regenerating the area.
