Go forth and multiplex
Article Abstract:
The multiplex cinema industry accounted for a 33% share of all cinema screens in the U.K. in 1994, against just 1% in 1985. The successful development of the multiplex industry has been advanced by the upward trend in cinema attendances, but many planners are concerned that out-of-town multiplexes and adjacent retail and leisure schemes are threatening the health and viability of town centres. However, a survey of several multiplex developments in the U.K. shows that such schemes do not harm the existing, traditional town-centre cinemas, most of which have remained open. It seems that the threat to such cinemas from multiplexes has been exaggerated.

The year of the Ochs
Article Abstract:
Millard L. Ochs was one of the pioneers of the multiplex cinema concept. Ochs joined AMC in 1976 and headed the UK operation, opening the UK's first multiplex at Milton Keynes in 1985. The UK division of AMC merged with CIC Theatres to form UCI (UK) and Ochs ultimately became the chief European officer, developing 130 screens. Ochs moved to Warner Bros. International Theatres Inc in 1994 and was appointed President in the same year. His immediate task was to add a further 142 screens to the existing total of 272 screens. Ochs' long-term plans include expansion into Japan and Taiwan.

Projecting a focus on entertainment
Article Abstract:
Leisure complexes are a major growth area in the European property market. Developments focus on multiplex cinemas which generate business for other leisure and retail operators. Investment in high-quality environments is attracting custom back to cinemas and fuelling the leisure sector growth. Major players in the sector include AMC Entertainment Inc., which anticipates that it will have 25 leisure complexes in Europe by the end of the century, and Village Roadshow Corporation Ltd., which is currently constructing complexes in four countries and negotiating in five others.
