Clothes designers such as Armani and Versace are opening clothes stores in major cities around the UK, and are introducing moderately priced diffusion ranges which more people can afford to buy. Designer jeans are widely available and have captured 21% of the UK casual clothing market, compared to 6% in 1992. Manchester and Glasgow are favourite areas for designers and the new stores tend to be large and occupy prime sites in city centres. One danger of this populist expansion is that the designer's image is diminished and their products may no longer be considered prized luxuries.

Some observers feel that the retail sector in the Kent town of Dartford will be very badly affected by the Bluewater retail and leisure development near junction 2 of the M25, which is due to be completed in 1998. Others feel that Dartford's retailers will be able to survive if they can complement this out-of-town complex, rather than trying to compete with it. Developments in Dartford's office and industrial sectors are more positive.

The Prime Health (UK) medical insurance company has had to respond to a 28% increase in business in 1995 by moving to new company offices. The expansion has meant that 320 permanent employees had to be relocated. The decision to stay in Guilford, England, where it has been situated since 1991 ensured that professional staff would not leave the company. Prime Health is now the fourth largest private medical insurance company in the UK.
