Knives out among restaurant rivals
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom restaurant sector is expanding, and restaurant chains are competing for sites. Diners spent 20.9 billion pounds sterling in UK restaurants in 1996 and experts expect this figure to grow by 42% in the following four years. The mid-market casual diner sector is the most dynamic. Whitbread purchased Pelican and BrightReasons groups during 1996, and will have opened a further 40 of Pelican's Cafe Rouge brand units by the end of 1997. City Centre Restaurants plans to open a further 120 units by the year 2000, and McDonald's plans a further 300 outlets in the same timespan.
