Life in the city
Article Abstract:
The Manchester, England, city centre residential market is buoyant, with some 100 million pounds sterling being invested in residential property development, between 1992-1998. Older commercial properties are being redeveloped to serve as residential units, to help satisfy the demand from young professional buyers. The value of properties has also increased, with some flats rising in value by 45%, in just eight months. It is predicted the number of housing properties available in the city centre, by 1999, will rise to around 2,000 units from around 800 units, in 1995.

Holiday destination
Article Abstract:
Old office blocks in Midtown, London, England, are being converted into hotels such as the Pearl Assurance Building in High Holborn which has been redeveloped into a luxury 390 bed hotel. The Holborn area is very close to many of the major theatres in London and to the main business areas. Some residential development schemes are also in progress, often situated above leisure facilities such as restaurants. The local planning authority is reluctant to sanction the change of use of residential property to hotels in order to retain the character of the area.

Crest of a wave
Article Abstract:
The residential market in Midtown, London, England, is strong with capital rises of around 10% during the first quarter of 1997. Some observers feel that the residential market has reached a peak and will be challenged by the increasing commercial market in the area. The local planning authority will permit residential development if the developers of more than 25 units promise to make 25% of their development into affordable housing. In some areas office to residential conversions are restricted due to poor parking facilities.
