Lord of the manor
Article Abstract:
Calthorpe Estate Chief Executive Richard Allen is planning to widen the portfolio of the company into commercial properties in addition to its ownership of residential property. The Calthorpe Estate owns 1,500 acres of land in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, but new regulations may remove its freehold entitlement to around 2,000 properties. The Estate plans to extend its operation into Hampshire where it plans to construct 1,700 new houses in a village setting. Allen was trained as a chartered surveyor and worked in a variety of companies before joining Calthorpe in 1996.

The profitable son
Article Abstract:
Delancey Estates Managing Director James Ritblat estimates his company can afford to invest about 400 million pounds sterling. He hopes to extend the business although he does not plan to go into development. Ritbalt favours long-term risk-averse investments. He failed to purchase Pollarcaisse's seven shopping malls, for more than 240 million pounds sterling. Delancey Estates purchased Freehold Portfolio Estates owned by the Ritbalts. John Ritblat owns 6% of the new company whilst his son, James, owns 1%. International Financier George Soros has a 65% share.

Sold on design
Article Abstract:
Investment company, Derwent Valley Holdings makes a point of giving commissions to young architects to alter and improve buildings from the 1950s and 1960s in central London, United Kingdom. Derwent has been able to obtain buildings cheaply because the recession reduced prices and its portfolio in 1997 was worth 309 million pounds sterling compared to 126 million in 1993. The company buys companies which have the potential to secure high rents after the work has been completed. Its pretax profit was 7.8 million pounds for the year to Dec 1998.
