Market towns need an edge
Article Abstract:
Out-of-town supermarket and retail warehouse developments have had a negative impact on the UK's market towns. This means that many market towns have not seen any real benefits from the consumer boom. It is now vital that local councils take action to revive the fortunes of market towns. A range of initiatives could be used, including offering free car parking and improved public transport. It is clear that the public sector must be involved in market town revival, as in many cases the public sector has caused the demise of market towns by granting planning consents that have robbed these towns of their centres.

Let's be bolder on brownfield
Article Abstract:
It is vital to revive city centres and protect green belt land in the UK. For this reason, the UK should consider raising its target for the proportion of new construction undertaken on brownfield sites to 75%, from the current 60%. The government or the European Union must make it more financially attractive for developers to choose brownfield sites, given that it is currently more expensive in capital cost terms to undertake brownfield development than greenfield development. It is also important to have consistent national guidelines for brownfield development.

Tackling the out-of-town threat
Article Abstract:
UK government plans to limit out-of-town retail developments have been given a warm welcome by planning committee chairmen. Many feel that there has been too much emphasis on out-of-town developments over recent years, and believe that this has had a negative impact on town centres. They also feel that large multiple stores have had a negative effect, as they have often forced the closure of smaller outlets.
